SEPS (Slovak Electricity Transmission System, Inc.) carries on an electricity transmission system, provides supervisory control, maintenance, restoration and development of the system to guarantee electricity supply and parallel operation with neighboring systems as recommended by the Union for the Co-ordination of Transmission of Electricity (UCTE). Soitron the system integrator, and the company SEPS replaces the original analogue system by IP telephony. For project success and positive customer perception is always necessary to overcome worker's initial fear of a new technology. Additional applications like 2Ring's IPPS help to gain confidence of new solution.
Business ObjectivesCustomer requirement was to deploy a modern telephony system so that the new solution had to meet all current requirements (control rooms, international links in the energy sector, a uniform numbering plan, etc..), and also it had to be prepared for the further growth and scalability.
SolutionTo achieve this goal Soitron decided to implement IP telephony with additional applications together.
The most important application in this case was IPPS from 2Ring, the member of the prestigious Cisco Technology Developer Network.
The first phase of the project consisted of IPPS Application deployment in standard mode. This means a purely centralized solution, where voice gateways and phones in all locations send requests to a central server IPPS. In this case the HP DL 320 with Windows Server 2003 and MS SQL Server 2005 located SEPS headquarters in Bratislava.
The deployment consisted of the following IPPS application modules:
- Basic module - a central corporate-wide directory of contacts available in all IP phones in company and the intranet core of application, which provides more services such as messaging or Intercom.
- CLIP module - automatically identifies phone number of incoming call, and displays it on the phone screen. Except the numbers an additional information about the caller (eg company name, etc.) is displayed.
- Messaging module - consists of two services. The first service is internal SMS messages, which can be sent from the phone itself or via the intranet interface. Second service is Intercom, which enables one-way communication to a group of users, usualy used to broadcast short messages like: "Operational consulting in five minutes".
- InfoDir module - brings to each desktop phone the current canteen menu.
In the forthcoming second phase of the project, there is a plan of deployment of second IPPS server in Zilina. Redundancy of IPPS application will be provided using database replication.
BenefitsSEPS found out that individual management of contacts prodided by employees is uneffective at least in three reasons:
- duplicate data logging,
- individual stored data would not be available to anyone, who might need it,
- the possibility of data loss.
Services provided by the IPPS application assure that the contact number is available directly on the phone the process of call already consist of instead of finding the number in one of the separated resources and manually dialing the number on phone . 2Ring IPPS (IP Phone Services) application saves time in making calls.
Other effectivnes of work is achieved by accessing a canteen menu directly on employees IP desk phones.
Quotation"Application of 2Ring IPPS (IP Phone Services) was a good choice for the initial attraction of IP telephony among employees of our company. It is perfectly integrated into the Cisco environment and many empolyees not aware that services which they daily use are not offered by Cisco telephony itself, but it is a very reliable 2Ring solution.
